The Carving of Arch Angel Michael 2000-2003 a 3 year project!
painting and gold leafing nearing completion
The angel is nearing completion. This week the Brown brothers, Adam, Joel & Nathan assisted me. The angel was assembled and placed on his feet to check stance and balance. (It was perfect!) All the main carving is finished, and all that remains is the finicky detailing, such as feathers, and the flowing cape. The flaming sword is still to be done. The statue will be covered in 2 coats of "kilz" primer, sanding between, then painted and gold leafed, and antiqued. He will be mounted on an eight inch "cloud" to give him the proper elevation of seven foot tall.
The skirt section is underway, you can see the legs in the background. The "leather armor" is being carved to look like "tooled" leather. This Angel is wearing heavily decorated "Roman" style armor. His wingspan is 7'. He holds a flaming sword. Wings, arms, head, cape fitted to body, but woll not be permanently attached at this time.
Torso section is glued to skirt. The skirt is 90% finished, but will be slightly
reshaped by addition of Torso, for a better flow of the figure. A cut out
section was left in the back as a "shelf" to help support the wings.
His armor will be gold leaf covered with carving and sapphire jewels, his leather will be carved to look like hand tooling. The wings will tips will be gold leafed. He will be standing on a cloud base, with his upraised flaming sword his total height will be over 7'.

The hand is cut out from both sides to eliminate all excess wood before carving with chisels begins. Hand is now shaped and carving on armor is roughed in .. details such as finger nails, will be added after final sanding.
The right hand holds the sword and was drilled out before carving begins. The general shape of the hand begins to form.
